Selsey RNLI Sponsored Walk 5 mile route

1. Start at the Lifeboat Station and head out left along the sea wall.

2. The end of the sea wall will provide walkers with 2 options:

a) carry along the beach or

b) if people wish they can go left down the slope, then right along Park Copse. Those that choose option b will join the beach a bit later and will only have a small section of stones to walk across.

3. At the end of the Park Copse go straight ahead.

4. Walkers will come across a wooden signpost and must turn left heading away from the beach

5. Follow the footpath leading from the beach through a wooded area to the end (Checkpoint 1) Marshalls will direct the 5-mile walkers depending on where they are in their walk (either right towards Church Norton – outwards, or left towards Park Farm - inwards).

6. Follow footpath on Grange Lane past Greenlease Farm until you get to a road (Rectory Lane) turn right

7. Head towards Church Norton Car Park on Rectory Lane Checkpoint 2 will use checkpoint 4 of the 10-mile route. Marshalls will direct the 5-mile walkers down the footpath of the car park leading to part of the reserve.

8. Proceed down footpath to the entrance of the nature reserve. (Please keep dogs on leads whilst on the nature reserve so as not to disturb the birds and wildlife), turn right at end of footpath.

9. Checkpoint 3 on the bench to direct walkers up the sleepers onto the footpath at the top of the beach. Follow the footpath to the next arrow situated on a signpost.

10. Turn right.

11. Take the footpath leading from the beach through a wooded area and down to Greenlease Farm to meet Checkpoint 1.

12. The walk then picks up the 10 mile route.

A Guide for Walkers

1. The organiser reserves the right to cancel the event should prevailing, or expected, weather conditions indicate that it would be unsafe for the walk to go ahead. All pre-registered participants will be advised of the decision to do so by email as soon as possible following the making of any such decision, but we would like to ask participants to check beforehand.

2. The registration/check-in desk at the Lifeboat Station will close at 14.00hrs.

3. If you think that you will not be able to return to the Station by this time, please advise the organizer at the earliest opportunity

4. Selsey RNLI helpers will be identified by the wearing of RNLI insignia.

5. Officials and marshals will be on duty at various points along the route to guide you if required and the route will be clearly marked with direction arrows. please note due to the nature of on-going coastal works, it may be necessary to make late adjustments to the route so please check with marshals for any diversions.

6. All walkers must visit each checkpoint. If you are unable to visit a checkpoint for any reason, please contact the organizer on 07946 176 480

7. Walkers should obey any local restrictions where applicable in addition to the Highway and Country codes. Please do not leave litter (bin bags will be available at each checkpoint for the safe disposal of any waste). Dog walkers, please pick up after your pets.

8. Much of the walk is on or adjacent to farmland so PLEASE keep to designated paths and if necessary, keep your dog on a lead.

9. In case of illness or distress, walkers must accept the advice of marshals or First Aiders as to whether they should take a rest or retire from the walk. In the event of an emergency please notify a marshal in the first instance, alternatively, if you are between checkpoints, contact the walk organizer on 07946 176 480 (a qualified first aider will be on duty at the registration desk from 8am to 2pm)

10. The Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve Café is expected to be open for refreshments on the day of the walk: tea, coffee etc. will be available. Toilet facilities are also available.

11. All walkers take part in this event at their own risk; the event organizers accept no responsibility or liability for any loss or injury however sustained whilst on the walk. In the event of bad weather developing during the event participants should discontinue the walk, make their way to the nearest place of safety and inform the organizer of their action. Be aware that in the event of adverse weather conditions in the days prior to the walk some paths may be in a poor state of repair.

12. Walkers should ensure that they are wearing clothing and footwear suited to the weather and ground conditions (e.g. hats, long-sleeved tops and sunscreen if is hot/sunny, raincoat and/or other protective garments if it is, has been, or is likely to be, wet).

13. Drinking water (for humans and their canine companions) will be available at the registration desk and all checkpoints.
